STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) – The mayor of Stevens Point thinks the city has a better chance of attracting a medical technology company because one of the company executives is a Stevens Point native.
Mayor Andrew Halverson said he and city staff have been working with Fred Mancheski of Shine Medical Technologies for more than two months on a plan to build a new manufacturing facility. Mancheski and his two business partners have visited Stevens Point several times to scout out possible sites for the plant.
“We're just very proud that Fred was able to recognize what Stevens Point would be able to do from an economic development point of view for the potential of Shine locating here in our community,” Halverson said.
The company makes special medical flashlights that are used during surgery.
Halverson would not reveal specifics of the economic development package the city has offered the company but said “it will be an all encompassing package that certainly does its best to put Stevens Point's best foot forward.”
Shine is also considering sites in Chippewa Falls and Janesville.
The company will choose a location this summer and hopes to begin operations in 2014.
