Thousands of WI Home Care Workers to Join Union

by

MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - About 5,500 Wisconsin home care workers are about to join a union. The Service Employees International Union said Thursday that the providers have voted to become part of their group. The workers perform a variety of services that allow elderly and disabled residents to keep living in their homes and stay independent.

The SEIU says over 10 other states have home care workers in its ranks. The groups are known to start training programs and registries that connect residents to qualified providers. They also work to increase funding for home-care services. The unionization was allowed as part of last year’s state budget. At the time, some Republicans feared it would raise costs for seniors – and perhaps drive more of them into nursing homes.
