MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Public hearings begin in 2 weeks on proposed rule changes to control runoff into Wisconsin waterways. The DNR will hold 5 hearings on its revised rules for non-point source pollution. Among other things, the state's Farm Bureau says the plans for managing farm nutrients would be based on local water quality instead of crop needs. Tillage and row-cropping would be banned within 20 feet of waterways. And there would be new definitions of feed lots, the phosphorus index, and wastewater processing. The public hearings are set for January 25th in Appleton, January 28th in Eau Claire, February 2nd in Waukesha, February 10th in Madison, and February 11th in Wausau. The Farm Bureau plans to hold meetings before each hearing to explain the changes to farmers.
