Woodchucks Return Tonight

by Tom King

The Northwoods League begins play tonight and the new season promises lots of excitment for fans. The biggest of course will be the renovated ballpark in Wausau. Woodchucks owner Mark McDonald decided to invest millions of his own money to fix up the aging ballyard and after seeing it the other day I would suggest that many professional minor league teams will not have amenities that Woodchucks fans will enjoy. The team's management is hoping that eventually there will be many other events at the park including concerts, other sports and additional youth baseball tournaments. The Wausau American Legion baseball team will also use Athletic Park as their home base for the coming season. The home opener for the Chucks is this Friday night with fireworks after the game.

The Chucks will open on the road tonight at La Crosse for a 7pm game against the Loggers. You can hear all of the Woodchucks games on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9 and selected Sunday games will also be broadcast on WSAU. The new voice of the Chucks is Sean Kellerman who hails from Kansas and I will join him for selected games when my Legion coaching duties allow. My first game in the booth with Sean will be Saturday night.

There are some familiar names returning to the Chucks roster this season including Brendon Hayden, Austin Orewiler and Max Ising...although it never takes too long for fans to embrace the new guys. One of those new guys is Alex Cordova from Merrill who just finished his 2nd season at UW-LaCrosse.

The South Division will that the Chucks play in will again feature the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, Battle Creek Bombers, Green Bay Bullfrogs, La Crosse Loggers, Lakeshore Chinooks, and Madison Mallards with two new teams , the Kenosha Kingfish & Kalamazoo Growlers joing the league. The Chucks will also play Inter-Division series with Duluth and Thunder Bay.

The high school season is winding down fast...this is the final week of the regular season and I will have the East Lumberjacks hosting Wisconsin today at 4:45 on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9 preceding the Woodchucks game. After the Chucks game we will also have the DCE-Merrill game in its entirety. The tournament for baseball begins next Tuesday.
