Uncharted Territory

by Tom King

The Marshfield American Legion baseball team has never been to a National Regional before. Plover has but not with the current crop of players. Both begin play today at the Great Lakes Regional in Terre Haute Indiana with a trip to the American Legion World Series on the line. It's a double elimination event much like the two tournaments preceding it. Plover won both the Central Wisconsin Regional here in Wausau a couple of weeks ago and also won the state tournament last week in Plover. Marshfield finished second at both but earned a spot as Wisconsin's second representative at the Nationals. Both teams are loaded with talented players. I believe Plover has a legitimate shot to win this thing. Marshfield has been a surprise team in my opinion but they are playing very well right now. The big thing is both of these teams will have a blast win or lose. I have experienced the national tournaments three times in my years of Legion coaching and each time was awesome. You spend alot of time together playing a big summer schedule and when you are playing well you don't want it to end. At this point the hard part is done...winning the local regional and state tournament is a meat grinder...anything after is gravy. I don't believe a Wisconsin team has ever advanced to the World Series. And even if it doesnt happen this year, the players and coaches on these teams will remember this fondly for the rest of their lives.

With all of the injuries to other teams in the Central Division the Brewers have a golden opportunity to win the title and head to the playoffs...but they have to do something about their bullpen. After being lights out for much of the season the pen is a mess right now. Doug Melvin has to make a move and make it soon...you don't get chances like this too often.

The Woodchucks lost last night but so did Kenosha. The Chucks lead is 1 1/2 games with 4 to play for the playoff spot. They are in Duluth tonight and you can hear the game on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.
