New Rule Is Unclear

by Tom King

Major League Baseball has decided that in order to protect the health of their players they will ban home plate collisions as part of the game starting this season. But there is some confusion over the rule even though many other levels of baseball banned home plate collisions long ago. The rule states that runners who leave a direct line to the plate in order to make contact with a catcher will be out..even if the catcher drops the ball when the hit is made. Conversely, catcher cannot block the plate unless they have the ball and if they do, the runner will be declared safe. Brewer catcher Jonathon Lucroy said he thought that catchers were not allowed to block the plate at any time and that runners were supposed to have a lane like they would sliding into second or third base. Baseball officials say they will hand out materials about the new rule and will have more meetings to discuss the rule with the players.

I have no problem with this rule. We have had it in Legion ball for years and even though "the play at the plate" is an exciting part of baseball...it still can be...but we wont have the violent collisions that have sent so many players to the disabled list over the years.

The Badger men and Pointer womens basketball teams won their games last night. Wisconsin survived a slow start in beating Indiana. They now face three "easy" regular season games to finish out the regular season schedule beginnng Sunday at Penn State.

The Pointers beat Platteville to open WIAC tournament play and will take on Oshkosh on Thursday night.

The Wausau West Warrior hockey team will play Antigo this Saturday with a trip to State on the line. West beat Spash last night 4-1 while the Red Robins outlasted Northland Pines 3-2 in two overtimes. West Salem upset Wisconsin Rapids 3-2 and in girls hockey the Central Wisconsin Storm keeps on rolling...they beat Point/Rapids 7-0 and will take on Northland Pines on Saturday as well.
