The Wausau West baseball team found themselves down 8-1 early yesterday to the Bayport Pirates in a baseball sectional semi-final. Bay Port has been a perennial baseball power in the state and had their number 1 pitcher on the mound. The Warriors had played poorly in the early innings with numerous errors, walks and empty at-bats. There was every indication that this game was over. Not so fast. Every coach will tell you that one of the things they work for is to teach their players to approach the game the same way no matter the score. Baseball is not like some other games where emotion can drive a team or a player to play better. Its a game of equilibrium. Stay on an even keel and concentrate on your training. If I go to a game I should never be able to tell who is winning by the body language and work ethic of the players. Now that is easier said then done...especially with high school players...some who were facing their last game. The Warriors started chipping away...a couple of runs here...a couple more ...plus they shut down Bay Port working out of some jams with good defense including a couple of double plays. West ended up tying the game in the 7th on a bang-bang play at first that could have ended it with a Bay Port win. The Pirates did come back and win in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded suicide squeeze. Of course the Warrior players and coaches are disappointed. The season is over. But I think the coaches at least had to feel a bit better at the end...because their team didnt roll over when they were down big...they kept playing the game...and a big part of that is training and instilling the idea that you always play the game like its 0-0.
Now that the high school season is over for most area teams, the American Legion Baseball season will heat up quickly. I'll be coaching the Wausau Post 10 Bulldogs again this summer and we begin play on Friday. In fact we will be in town all weekend with 5 games on the schedule. You can check it out at Athletic Park...Friday vs Marshfield at 7pm...Saturday a doubleheader at noon with Green Bay Southwest and Sunday at noon with a doubleheader vs Appleton.
