Things are happening at Athletic Park in Wausau....and it's not just cosmetic. Yes, the venerable ballyard underwent a massive facelift over the winter and yes it's looks great...but a ballpark facelift alone would not keep fans coming if the teams that play there didn't win. The Woodchucks started the season 0-4 but are now rolling along. They have won 11 of their last 12 and moved into first place in the Southern Division of the Northwoods League. They are doing it with pitching, defense and hitting and so it promises to be an extended run of success this season. Come to see the new ballpark and stay to watch winning baseball.
The Wausau Legion baseball team will also play their home games at Athletic Park this summer and have started the season with a couple of wins there. Post 10 had a big crowd for their opener last Friday (I would imagine to see the renovations) and fans got to see a rally and 10th inning walk off win. The Bulldogs next home game is Tuesday vs Plover at 7pm.
Mark McDonald, the owner of the Woodchucks. should be lauded for his vision and ability to get the renovation accomplished while still keeping the charm of the old granite facade. But I'll bet he would much rather have you come out to the park to watch winning baseball and the Chucks, at least so far, are producing that.
Good luck to the DC Everest, Rhinelander and Rapids Assumption girls soccer teams as they play at the WIAA State Tournament today. It's also championship day at the baseball State Tournament as the high school sports year will conclude. And yet we are less than 2 months out from the first football practice.
Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)
New Years Day-U2 (1983) the song that introduced many to the unique voice of Bono and the guitar work of The Edge. First single from the "War" album
New York Groove-Ace Frehley (1978) obviously the best solo effort by any of the KISS members was this dance inflected effort...gotta alot of nightclub play back in the disco days
