Making The Leap

by Tom King

You never know when a proverbial doormat is going to make the jump to contender in the world of sports. It wasnt too long ago that the Seattle Seahawks were one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Washington Nationals were the laughingstock of major league baseball. And in the NBA you had the LA Clippers and the Washington Wizards. It's easy to see how the Clips have made the leap. Adding guys like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin would turn almost any team into a contender. But the Wiz are not as easy to see coming. They have all of a sudden knocked off the Chicago Bulls and have taken game 1 in the second round over the #1 seed Indiana Pacers. Yes they have young stars in John Wall and Bradley Beal...but it was an influx of veterans like Trevor Ariza, Marcin Gortat, Al Harrington, Nene, Andre Miller and Aaron Rodgers favorite player Drew Gooden (yes the former Buck who looked washed up last year)...to solidify a rotation that has given seemingly better teams all kinds of trouble. Rodgers has been tweeting about Gooden..(he's in love with his mid-range jumper). So maybe the Bucks can take heart...you can move from also-ran to contender if you make good use of your high draft choices and judiciously add veterans here and there that can make contributions. It will be interesting to see what the Bucks do in the upcoming draft and the off-season.

A nice comeback for the Wausau West Warrior baseball team on Monday...they were down 7-0 to DC Everest but came back to tie and then win with 4 runs in the 11th inning. Shoddy defense did in both Everest and the East Lumberjacks in their game yesterday. Gotta tighten up the D and help your pitchers out.

Forgive me if I keep reminding you about our Wausau Legion Baseball Pancake Breakfast and Raffle...this Sunday at Bunkers from 8-noon. It's our major fund raiser for the upcoming season.

Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod) Bob Seger's birthday today...he's 69

Night Moves-Bob Seger (1976) one of the greatest 'coming of age' songs of all-time. If he never wrote anything else...this would have been enought to seal his greatness

Turn The Page-Bob Seger (1973) again he writes a classic. There have been dozens, maybe hundreds of songs about the touring musician...none captures the bleakness like this one
