Can The Bullpen Be This Good?

by Tom King

Every Milwaukee Brewer fan knew what had to happen for the tam to be successful this season. They had to be much healthier than last year's team. Losing Braun and Ramirez for a big chunk of the season decimated the offense. They had to get better starting pitching starting with reputed ace Yovanni Gallardo. Had they had to improve a woeful bullpen. all of those thing shave happened so far this season and gee...look at the standings. Milwaukee finds themselves with the best record in baseball and 5 1/2 games up on the Cardinals after last nights thrilling come from behind win in 12 innings. And the first place to loo is the bullpen. They have been incredible. With the exception of one blowout game they have been lights out. The stat of the day is that they have not given up a run late in a game with the Brewers leading since April 9th. K-Rod has set a team record for saves in the month of April. He's 12 for 12 and hasnt given up a run yet. Neither has Will Smith who is quickly making folks forget Nori Aoki. Converted starter Tyler Thornburg has been an excellent set-up man giving up just 1 run and six hits in 12 2/3 innings of work. Brandon Kintzler has been very good with an ERA of 1.29 and even Zach Duke who was picked up off the scrap heap for a spring training tryout has been excellent. He picked up the win last night and has an ERA of 1.46. And don't forget Jim Henderson. He lost the closer's job but hasnt sulked...and is working to get his velocity back. The starters have been good...but the bullpen is the main reason why the Brewers are where they are. Can it continue? Well, probably not like this. You would like to see them get a bit more rest. But after last season, how can you not like the direction this team is going.

We are looking at a couple of Game 7's in the NHL coming up later this week. Both Minnesota and th LA Kings have forced decisive games in their respective series. The Kings were down 0-3 to the Sharks. The Wild have forced a tie with the Avalanche. Nothing quite like a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Believe it or not we played high school baseball last night in Eagle River. It rained all the way up and stopped about 5 miles outside of town. With piles of snow in the parking lost and some in foul ground in front of the East dugout...with stinging sleet falling for part of the game...the Lumberjacks of Wausau East rolled over Northland Pines 13-0. Willy Brand tossed a five inning no hitter with 12 strikeouts...he allowed only one walk and only two balls were put in play by the Eagles offense. Pines is coached by former Lumberjack standout Rob Govek.

We are scheduled to have doubleheader baseball today on Foxsports Radio AM 1390 & FM 93.9...first up DC Everest at Marshfield followed by Wausau East and Stevens Point...weather permitting.
