Brewer Bullpen Has Been Good...No, Really

by Tom King

The Milwaukee Brewer bullpen took some much deserved heat for their slow start. The late blow ups by the pen...especially John Axford contributed to the team's slow start. But over the last month the pen has actually been very good...even Axford. The bullpen ERA dropped to 2.95 over the last 34 games which ranks Milwaukee fourth in the NL. And Axford has seen his ERA improve to 4.82 and hasnt been scored upon in his last 15 appearances. Axford says his curveball has been much better and he's throwing it more. Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez have also thrown well at the back end of the pen with the exception of Henderson's gopher ball to Giancarlo Stanton the other night...but even that was only Henderson's 2nd HR allowed in his entire big league career. Now about that starting pitching...even though Kyle Lohse and Yovanni Gallardo had recent back to back 8 inning stints...the starters have been struggling and until they get more consistent results...the team is probably going to languish near the cellar.

You never like to earn something because of an injury to another player but Brewer shortstop Jean Segura will probably start in his first All-Star game now that Troy Tulowitski of the Rockies has gone down with a broken rib that will keep him out for an extended time. Segura has been excellent this year so he definitly deserves the All-Star recognition.

The Woodchucks couldnt do much with Jonathon Lucroy's little brother last night. David Lucroy and a couple of relievers shut down the Chucks on 1 run and just 2 hits as Lakeshore won 4-1. The Chucks welcome in Wisconsin Rapids for a game tonight (Friday). I'll be in the booth with Jim Sannes for tonight's action on Foxsports AM1390 & FM 93.9.

The Wausau Legion Post 10 Bulldogs return to action Saturday with with a noon doubleheader vs Chippewa Falls at Athletic Park...they then head to Menominee on Sunday.
