Tonight's prep picks

by Chris Schulte

It's Week 3 of the high school football season and the pack already is being separated into three distinct groups: The powerhouses, the it's-going-to-be-a-long-fall pack and the it's-too-early-too-tell group. Here are my picks on 10 of the top games of the night.

Appleton North 34, D.C. Everest 14: Not enough defense or offense for the Evergreens.

Wausau West 27, Appleton West 7: As long as the Warriors don't have a hangover from last week's heartbreaking loss to SPASH they should be fine. And I find it hard to believe a Kevin Grundy-led team isn't going to be ready. To paraphrase Grundy's favorite quote: We look through the windshield, not the rear view mirror.

Kimberly 50, Wausau East 6: This is not the week the Lumberjacks are going to get that first victory.

Menasha 27, SPASH 20: This should be one of the more interesting games of the night. Menasha hung tough with Kimberly and then destroyed Kaukauna, while SPASH handled Everest on opening night, but were taken to the brink by Wausau West last week. The edge goes to the home team, Menasha.

Marshfield 30, Fond du Lac 14: The Tigers are home for the first time since their opening week loss to Wausau West and are going to be out to show the home fans the real Tigers. And no better team to do that against than struggling Fond du Lac (0-2).

Newman Catholic 21, Athens 14: This will be another good one and it will come down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. Unlike some teams that can overcome mistakes, neither of these teams are good enough to do so.

Stratford 37, Regis 31: This should be a wild one between the rivals, but in the end the Tigers will avenge last season's 50-0 pasting suffered at the hands of the Ramblers. It won't come easy, though.

Mosinee 27, Medford 16: After two weeks on the road, the Indians finally get a home game, against a team that happened to beat them last season. Go with the Indians.

Edgar 45, Auburndale 6: The only downside of this game for the Wildcats will be their inability to keep the Apaches out of the end zone. Edgar cruises to 3-0.

Marathon 31, Phillips 0: The Red Raiders have allowed just eight points this season and it will stay that way after this game against out-classed Phillips.
