Carrie Underwood is set to star as Maria Von Trapp in a three-hour live production of The Sound of Music, coming to NBC around the holiday season in 2013. The show will be based on the original Broadway musical and produced by the same team responsible for NBC's Broadway-themed drama Smash and the movie musicals Chicago and Hairspray.
"Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," the network's entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt told Us Weekly in a statement Nov. 30. "She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."

Set in Austria, The Sound of Music documents the true story of aspiring nun von Trapp, who falls in love with widower Captain von Trapp after she is tasked with caring for his seven children.
Carrie has acted in a few movies and sitcom guest spots before, but this will easily be her highest-profile acting role to date. Carrie also hosted her own holiday variety TV special in 2009 and has co-hosted the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley for the past five years.
I've never been a big fan of the musical, I know, terrible huh...but I will tune in to watch Carrie's performance. Will you?
