Taylor Swift revealed the details of her new album, Red, in a Web chat with fans from around the world Monday night. The project will be in stores October 22. Taylor also premiered the lead single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," at the end of the chat.
"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is an uptempo song about one of Taylor's ex-boyfriends, though she didn't get specific about which boyfriend inspired it. Several fans were in the room with Taylor for the chat, and she led them in a singalong of the song as it played for the first time. "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is now available on iTunes and Google Play. Taylor co-wrote it with Swedish pop producers Max Martin and Johan Shellback, best known for their work with the likes of Britney Spears, Pink, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5.
"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" started out when a friend of Taylor's ex-boyfriend came into the studio where she was working with Max and Johan. The friend had heard Taylor and her ex were getting back together, which was not the case.
Taylor tells ABC News, "When he leaves, Max and Johan are like, 'Woah, what’s the story behind that?' And so I start telling them the story of this just break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, uh, the worst. And I picked up the guitar and I just -- Max said, 'This is what we're writing.'"
That's when Taylor picked up the guitar and started singing the hook for "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
"It just happened so fast," Taylor says. "It was so much fun."
"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" shot to #1 on the iTunes songs chart just after it was released.
