Denzel Washington threw The Book of Eli at Avatar and still came up short. James Cameron's Golden Globe-winning sci-fi epic was the top movie for the fifth weekend in a row, earning an estimated 41.3 million dollars. It has now surpassed the original Star Wars film to become the third-highest grossing movie of all time in the U.S., having raised 491.8 million to date. However, it's important to note that ticket prices are higher now than they were when Star Wars premiered in the 1977 and was re-released in later years. In addition, the admission price for the 3-D version of Avatar is higher than that for a standard theatrical release.

At the domestic box office, Avatar now trails only The Dark Knight, which earned 533.3 million bucks, and James Cameron's Titanic, which collected 600 million. Avatar has made a total of 1.6 billion worldwide.

Denzel Washington's The Book of Eli did well in its debut weekend, earning 31.6 million dollars to land in second place. The drama The Lovely Bones finished in third place, with 17.1 million, after expanding into wide release on Friday. The Jackie Chan comedy The Spy Next Door opened at number six, with 9.7 million.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

1. Avatar, $41.3 million.
2. The Book of Eli, $31.6 million.
3. The Lovely Bones, $17.1 million.
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, $11.5 million.
5. Sherlock Holmes, $9.8 million.
6. The Spy Next Door, $9.7 million.
7. It's Complicated, $7.7 million.
8. Leap Year, $5.8 million.
9. The Blind Side, $5.6 million.
10. Up in the Air, $5.5 million.

I STILL  have not seen Avatar and I honestly have no desire to see it.  Is that wrong?  ~Vanessa
