A new Northwoods League season is upon us and the Wisconsin Woodchucks enter the season with a new look. Mark McDonald recently bought the team from long-time owner Clark Eckhoff. Plus it will be all new players on the roster this season and Eric Supplee will be the field manager from day one after taking over last year during the season.
The league also has a new team in the Woodchucks division. the LakeShore Chinooks will begin play in Mequon on the campus of Concordia University. Minority owners of the suburban Milwaukee team include Bob Uecker, Robin Yount and Bucks GM John Hammond.
The Chucks opne the season on the road tonight and tomorrow at Eau Claire. The home opener is Friday night against Green Bay. Jim Sannes will be back in the radio booth for all the game and I will join him as my Legion baseball coaching schedule allows. You can hear all of the Woodchucks games on Foxsports1390 and select Sunday games also on WSAU. Tonights game begins with the pre-game show at 6:15.
The Brewers seem to be circling the wagons after all the injuries. Mike Fiers comes up and pitches well to pick up his first major league win in his first start last night. And Ryan Braun continues to hit well. That will have to continue. He needs to carry the offense for awhile.
The San Antonio Spurs look unstoppable at this point. They have reeled off 20 wins in a row. That seems impossible in the NBA but here we are. Everybody though the Thunder was going to play in the championship this season but it looks like it will be a Spurs-Heat series which has its own great story lines.
The NBA draft lottery is tonight. The Bucks are in it but have virtually no chance to get the top pick.
The Stanley Cup Finals begin tonight. Its a Red-Eye series that will move from New Jersey to LA. Interesting and unlikely matchup.
Congrats to a number of area golfers who earned trips to the State High School Championships on Tuesday. Among them Joe Benbow of Wisconsin Rapids, Alex Schremp of Wausau East and Matt Sandquist of Wausau West. also Steven Maes of Pacelli and Quinn Hartley of Rapids Assumption.
Songs of the Day (from my I-pod)
Jailhouse Rock-Elvis Presley (1957) a Lieber & Stoller classic from the film of the same name. This video is oddly disturbing isnt it?
Jaimie's Cryin-Van Halen (1978) I'm firmly in the David Lee Roth camp in the endless Roth-Hagar "who's better" argument. This version of the band is the best and this song from the debut smokes. Plus Tone Loc sampled this for the classic "Wild Thing"
