If Its Too Good To Be True....

Melky Cabrera is an aging outfielder who had never been very good before last season. All of a sudden he put together an outstanding year and the Royals traded him to the Giants for pitching help. He continued to crush the ball this season...made the All-Star team and was actually named MVP of the mid-summer classic. Yesterday Melky Cabrera was suspended by major league baseball for 50 games. He tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. The  stat-heads will tell you that very few players get measurably better after the age of 28 or 29. So some were already looking at Cabrera's resurgence with suspicion. They were right.

The difference between Cabrera's case and Ryan Braun is that Braun has consistently put up big numbers over the course of his career including this year where he was being watched and monitored very closely. He did sit yesterday as he battles through a slump that's going on over the last couple of weeks.

Felix Hernandez was overpowering yesterday as he threw the first perfect game in Seattle Mariner history beating the Rays 1-0. Love the availability of the MLB Network as they could immediatly take us to the game and I could see the final few innings. The Rays have had three perfect games thrown against them...so have the Dodgers...the only difference is that LA has been around over a hundred years longer.

Expect to see alot of Graham Harrell tonight when the Packers face the Browns. Mike McCarthy says that Harrell needs more playing time at this point in his career. You'd like to see Aaron Rodgers have some success tonight after the stinker that the first team offense laid down last week. Alex Green gets the start at tailback...I'm interested to see what he can do.

Interesting music news that the Monkees are going on tour in honor of the late Davy Jones....what makes it interesting is that Mike Nesmith is joining the tour. He hasnt worked with the band since an aborted reunion tour in the late 90's. Nesmith, an accomplished country and country-rock singer-songwriter, was always the most talented musician of the bunch...but was also a pretty good comedian and played off the other guys with a really dry sense of humor.

Happy Birthday to the original Catwoman Julie Newmar who set young boys libidos racing in the mid-sixties...she's 79 today.

And Timothy Hutton is 52...his tv show Leverage is an entertaining hour....sort of a cross between Mission Impossible and Oceans 11.

Songs of the Day   (from my I-pod)

Just The Other Side Of Nowhere-Kris Kristopherson...he was a Rhodes Scholar and Army Ranger who decided he wanted to write songs . We are the better for it

Just What I Needed-The Cars (1978) the first single from a solid power-pop band. It exploded out of your radio
