The Wisconsin Badgers got lucky on Saturday but they also overcame adversity and won the game. When the final tally is made at the end of the season there are no points given for style...a win is a win..is a win. And despite the teeth gnashing of some, Arizona State isnt chopped liver. They are a big school, from a major conference, with alot of young, fast hungry players. And the Badgers are a banged up team right now. They didn't have their top two recievers...their linebacker situation is all muddled with injuries and JJ Watt wasnt 100%. Obviously the special teams coverage units need some work but let's not panic...there is a reason that Wisconsin was predicted to be good and if they can get healthy before the Big Ten opener they should be fine. The pollsters don't seem concerned. Wisconsin stayed at #11 in the AP poll and actually moved up a spot in the USA Today poll to #10.
The Packers thought they were getting a pretty good player when they drafted USC linebacker Clay Mathews Jr but I don't think anybody expected him to dominate they way he has. Let's face it, he didnt even become a starter in college until late in his career. And he wasnt even the first linebacker taken from USC in that draft. But there isnt another player drafted that year that the Packers would rather have right now. He credits the scheme of Dom Capers and the play of his teammates so humbleness is part of the package as well.
Sunday musings...The Vikings are struggling just as I predicted a couple of weeks ago. The Jets and Colts both rebounded nicely in Week 2. Washington thought they had a victory when their kicker nailed a FG in OT but Houston coach Gary Kubiak had called timeout just before the snap so the kick didnt count. He had to do it again and missed. The Texans then went down and kicked the game winner. That being said...Donovan McNabb makes Washington an instant contender in the East.
It's the final home stand of the year for the Brewers this week. Its starts tonight against the Reds and finishes this weekend against Florida. It might be the last time to see Prince Fielder in a Brewer uniform.
Happy Birthday to former Packer great Jim Taylor. He's 75 today and could probably still bang it in from the 1 for a TD.
Songs of The Day (from my Ipod)
Go Down Gamblin-Blood, Sweat & Tears (1971) 3 members of the band left after this Lp including vocalist David Clayton-Thomas who played the scorching guitar on this one.
Go Insane-Lindsey Buckingham (1984) originally a fast tune but he re-does it here from a Fleetwood Mac concert. it works both ways. He's an underated guitarist.
