Putting Cal Ripken In Perspective

Posted by Tom King on

Cal Ripken Jr played in 2632 consecutive major league baseball games. It's a record that will never be broken. Players are not allowed to play with nagging injuries in many cases. Teams have invested too much money to allow a player to play with a sore arm or a broken finger. I'm thinking about Ripken today because last night Prince Fielder was not in the lineup for the Milwaukee Brewers because of the flu. It was the first time since Sept 4th 2008 that Prince was not in the Brewer lineup. What's so big about that you ask? Well, It was the longest current consecutive game streak in the majors and the longest streak in Brewer history. It was 327 straight games. Gee, he only needed 2,305 to tie Ripken.

Ryan Grant will not play this week. He's got a high ankle sprain...which will probably keep him sidelined for awhile. Brandon Jackson get's his oppourtunity. Also, Justin Harrell has probably played his last game for the Packers. He tore up his knee...Harrell just could not stay healthy...and he got injured on a field goal try...how often does that happen.

Great to see that David Gilreath of the Badgers is out of the hospital and feeling good. The hit he took on Saturday looked very bad. Bret Bielema says he wont be back on the field until all of his concussion symptoms are gone. He only has to ask his teammate Nick Toon's father, Al , about what repeated  concussions can do to your quality of life.

The Wausau Newman Girls Tennis team and Wausau East Girls Volleyball team kept on rolling with victories on Monday night. It looks like it could be special seasons for both of those squads.

One of the best 60's bands is reuniting for the first time in decades. The surviving members of Buffalo Springfield will be on stage on October 23 & 24th for the Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View California. Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay will headline the event both nights. The other original members, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin both passed away. The Springfield were a great live band and recorded some of the best country-rock of the mid-60's era although they were only together for 19 months. Neil Young and his wife founded the Bridge school years ago for students with severe physical and speech impairments after having a special needs child of their own. Other performers this year include Elvis Costello, Elton John, Jackson Browne, and Billy Idol.

Here are some gems from the Springfield

Rock & Roll Woman-Buffalo Springfield (1967) a peformance from the "Flip Wilson Show"

Go and Say Goodbye-Buffalo Springfield (1966) a Furay tune with nice harmonies and some tasty picking.
