Brewer manager Ken Macha will probably not survive the off-season. It's certainly not his fault that the Brewer pitching and defense has been so mediocre this season. But a change at the top plus many changes to the roster seem to be in the offing. One thing you can say about Macha though , is that he is a professional. Case in point...Trevor Hoffman. Baseball's all-time save leader was brutally bad earlier this season...so bad that Macha removed him from the closers's role. Now Hoffman could have pouted , asked for his release, or accepted his fate and played out the string this season before moving on. Instead he went back to work to figure out the problem. Now Macha could have easily said....sorry, John Axford has done well  and he's now our closer. But Macha also knew how close Hoffman was to a major milestone...600 saves....and has used him in the closer's role again down the stretch. Hoffman reached the milestone last night. It's a tribute to his hard work over the years to stay in better shape than players much younger..but also to the professional nature of his low key manager who ignored his earlier futility and gave him the chance to reach the goal. Hoffman's early season performance will probably play a part in Macha's getting fired but both men know that getting fired, benched or cut are all part of professional sports and that's something that will never change.

Tiger Woods was named to the Ryder Cup team yesterday as one of Corey Pavin's captains picks. He's joined by Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and 21 year old Rickie Fowler.

The Badger football team up one spot this week to 11th in both major polls. The Badgers host San Jose State this Saturday at Camp Randall.
