The Wausau East Lumberjack Girls Cross Country Team is the best in the area. I don't think many would argue with that. Led by Ashley Eckhoff and Katelyn Stine they win most of the events they enter. the City Cross Country Meet was yesterday and there was no reason to expect anything different to happen. Except even Eckhoff and Stine can't run an extra 3K and expect to win. That's what happened as the leaders took a wrong turn onto the boys course during the race and finished 10 minutes off the pace. That allowed Wausau West to take the team title with East's Krista Maguire to win the individual crown. Sam Anderson of DCE won the individual title in leading the Evergreens to the boys crown. I ran cross country in high school for the Lumberjacks and remember a city meet when it was run around the Wausau Insurance Building on the west side. a few runners took a wrong turn in that race but quickly recovered and got back on track. I can't remember if the finish order was altered but i remember alot of swearing going on during the race.
Other stuff from Thursday included the East Girls Tennis team winning the Valley Conference Crown. East beat Merrill in volleyball and West in swimming. The Warriors returned the favor on the soccer pitch 4-1. Everest shut out Spash in soccer 2-0
It will be a very interesting Friday night of high school football as the season is winding down fast. Some teams need a win tonight if they hope to make the playoffs. The most surprising must win game is DCE-Stevens Point. A loss tonight would really make it tough for the Everegreens and Spash doesnt want to drop to in a row. You can hear the game as the opener of our doubleheader on Foxsports 1390 WRIG at 6:30. That will be followed by Wausau East at Wisconsin Rapids as the banged up Lumberjacks try to slow down the triple option attack of the Raiders. I'll have the call from Rapids.
The Ryder Cup is under way in Wales. Tiger Woods is paired with Steve Stricker in today opening match. It will be interesting to see if Captain Corey Pavin plays Woods in all the matches or replaces him with one of the hotter players at some point.
Happy Birthday to Rod Carew...the seven time batting champion turns 65.
Songs of the Day (from My I-pod)
Golden Country-REO Speedwagon (1972) When REO was just a straight ahead rock & roll outfit featuring the searing guitar of Gary Richrath. Saw this version of the band in college at Quandt Fieldhouse at UWSP with Kansas and they tore down the house.
Golden Years-David Bowie (1975) the last of Bowie's funk flavored singles before he drifted into techno-pop. He reportedely offered this to Elvis but The King turned it down
