State Tournament Madness

Posted by Tom King on

Most high schools have already let out for the summer but some student-athletes havent finished up just yet. Three State Tournaments will be contested this week to finish up the 2009-2010 athletic year. The 63rd annual State Spring Baseball Championships start today at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Merrill has the early wakeup as they play Bayport, the defending D-1 champ at 8am. If they win they would play a semi-final tonight against either Waunakee or Kimberly. Marathon and Rosholt begin their quest tomorrow in D-3 & D-4.

The State Softball and Girls Soccer Tournaments begin this Thursday. Wausau East will play Verona in the first round soccer matchup. Tigerton is the only central Wisconsin school at the softball tournament and they will face Potosi on Friday.

It was like something out of "The Natural". Seth McMullen had finished his 10 day stay with the Woodchucks who decided they had too many other players to keep McMullen on the roster....so with a year of American Legion eligibility left he re-joined the Wausau Post 10 Bulldogs for last night's doubleheader with Rhinelander. He came in to pinch-hit with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning of Game 1 and promptly hit a grand slam. He added a 3 run blast in the second game as the Bulldogs swept Rhinelander 16-5 and 10-1 to go to 5-1 on the season. They will host Stevens Point on Thursday.

Ryan Braun also had a grand slam last night as the Brewers started their West Coast trip with a 12-2 pounding of the Angels. Randy Wolf has his curve ball working last night an got the win giving up just  2 runs and three hits in 7 innings of work.

I'll be in the booth tonight with Adam Seidel as the Woodchucks host the first place Eau Claire Express in a doubleheader. you can hear both games on Foxsports1390 WRIG beginning at 5:20...first pitch at 5:35. it's Ron Dayne night at the ballpark. Come out and meet the former Heisman Trophy winner and Badger legend.

Songs of the Day  (from my I-pod)

Frenesi-Artie Shaw (1940) the clarinetist and one of the great band leaders had a hit with this latin-tinged tune. Many others did it as well.

Friday on My Mind-Easybeats (1966) An Australian band hits the US during the British Invasion. This version isnt the original but it's close
