I've spent the last few days in the broadcast booth for the Wisconsin Woodchucks games on Foxsports1390 WRIG. It's been a blast and I'll be doing around 25 games this summer as my schedule permits along with Chucks main announcer Adam Seidel who is a college broadcaster from Northwestern and is doing a great job. I know he's much smoother than I was at his age. What is interesting is that the baseball being played as thrown conventional wisdom on it's ear. So far I've seen an unsuccesful steal of home in the first inning...a safety squeeze attempt by the #3 hitter also in the first inning with no outs and runners on the corners....a guy scoring from second on an infield double play....drag bunt attempts from the cleanup hitter....in other words, strange stuff. It seems that with the players making the adjustment from aluminum to wood bats...the coaches are less inclined to expect the hitters to put the ball in play sharply and would rather be more aggressive on the base paths or play little ball with bunts and steals. The main problem so far is that the bunting skills of all of the teams I've seen are sorely lacking...probably because most of these guys didn't have to bunt much coming up through high school. So far the Chucks are 3-2 and are using good defense and outstanding bullpen pitching. Even Eric Fritz who didn't pitch much for the Pointers this season came out and gave them 3 scoreless innings the other day. The high point for West grad Seth McMullen so far was a three-run homer in the win on Saturday. He hasnt played very much and hasn't been used at his natural shortstop position yet.The Chucks play at Eau Claire tonight(Monday) before returning home Tuesday to face La Crosse.
It hasnt been as easy for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in their inaugaral season. they are 0-4 and face Green Bay tonight at Witter Field. It's Moe Hill night and the Rapids Twin legend will be in town to see his jersey retired. Hill was a long time member of the Wisconsin Rapids Twins when they were a Minnesota affiliate in the Midwest League and hit alot of home runs in his career.
Basketball fans should be enjoying the coming out party for Rajon Rondo. Rondo has been spectacular for the Celtics as they have pulled even with the Lakers...winning in LA on Sunday. Rondo had a triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Tuesday is Sectional day for high school baseball and the Wausau West warriors will be playing their first game against Bayport in Green Bay. If they win they face the winner of Ashwaubenon-Green Bay Southwest. The other central Wisconsin teams still alive in include Medford who plays Seymour in D-2, Marathon vs Crandon and Neillsville vs Elk Mound in D-3 and Greenwood vs Athens and Rosholt vs Pembine -Goodman in D-4
Songs of the Day (from my I-pod)
Fox On The Run-The Sweet (1974) glam rock from an underrated pop band who had a string of hits in the early-mid 70's
Foxey Lady-Jim Hendrix (1967) You can almost here the leer in his voice. You certainly can't miss the fire in his ax. it's hard to believe that he was the opening act on a Monkees tour.
