Pregorexia

angelinaA recent article in the Canadian press credits celebrity moms for a new unhealthy phenomenon known as "pregorexia."

Preganant women see pictures of celebrities who are expecting who haven't put on much weight and think they should look like that. They feel so badly about their changing bodies that they develop an eating disorder. It carries over after they have their baby too. When they see celebrities bounce back to their superskinny selves only a few months or in some cases weeks after giving birth they think they should be donning their pre-pregnancy clothes that quickly too.

These women need to be reminded that the reality is that these women have nannies and trainers and dieticians that allows them to get back to the Hollywood ideal. In real life it takes women about 9 months to get back to "normal" some women take longer and some are lucky enough to dump the extra pounds sooner. Every woman is different and it is never ever fair to compare yourself to celebrities.

And not all celebrities are like Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham. I was pregnant along with Jessica Simpson and Hillary Duff and I was happy to see that the two of them struggled with their weight as much as I did. Jessica is still workin it off and doing weight watchers to help her get back to her pre-baby size.

The weight is very hard to deal with when you are pregnant, but you have to remember that gaining weight is good for your baby. If you're starving yourself you're starving your baby too! As long as you are eating healthy and only increasing your calories by 300-500 a day you will not gain too much weight and if you don't gain too much weight it is much easier to get back to pre-pregnancy size. And if you breastfeed you'll ditch those LBs even faster.
