Breastfeeding in Uniform Wrong?

breastfeedingApparently some people are up in arms because some military moms posed for professional pictures to promote Breastfeeding Awareness Month which is coming up in August. In the picture two moms dressed in military fatigues were breastfeeding their babies.

One of the moms featured in the picture, Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, breastfeeds her twin girls during her lunch breaks on drill weekends for the Air National Guard.

"I have breast-fed in our lobby, in my car, in the park ... and I pump, usually in the locker room," she says. "I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breast-feeding. I'm proud of the photo and I hope it encourages other women to know they can breast-feed whether they're active duty, guard or civilian."

Someone claiming that it is inappropriate for a woman to breastfeed their baby while in uniform compared it to being photographed urinating or deficating while in uniform. As a breastfeeding mom myself I am horribly offended by that! Me feeding my baby is in no way comparable to elimination!

There is no policy in place saying that these women cannot breastfeed while in uniform nor should they be! Employers are required by law to provide a private place for breastfeeding or pumping why should the military be any different. I realize that some people believe that women become asexual when they are in uniform, but no matter how you want to see them to make it easier for you to cope with the fact that they are incredibly brave fighting for our freedom the fact remains they are women and mothers. They fight for our rights shouldn't they be allowed to exercise them?

Babies were born to be breastfed.
