Yesterday was Mia's first swim lesson. She is in the Shrimp class at the Woodson Y. The class is for ages 6 months to 2 years. There was one other baby in the class, Audrey, she is 13 months.
Mia cried when I first put her in the water. She clung to me and tried walking up me to stay out of the water. Audrey just stared at Mia while she cried. Eventually Mia got used to the water.
It must be hard to try to teach a class that is designed for kids 6 months to 2 years. There's a big difference in what a 6 month old and a 2 year old can do. Miss Erin wanted Mia to blow bubbles, but she doesn't even blow on food yet so she just tried to drink the pool water. She doesn't really understand kicking though she naturally does it a little when I pull her through the water. Miss Erin wanted the girls to jump into the pool. But Mia doesn't jump she just bounces and only when she wants to not on command.
She got really excited at the end of the class when Miss Erin pulled out the tub of toys. She played with a boat for a little while and that was the first time I saw her smile in the pool.
We have swim class again tonight. Daddy is going in the pool with her this time and I'll take pictures. Hopefully she likes it a little better today.
Did your kids take swim lessons? How old were they when they first started?
