The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for our area read the full Severe Weather Statement here. Today we have an expected high around 97 with heat index values over 100 degrees.
In this kind of heat it is important to remember heat safety tips. Excessive heat claims more lives each year in the United States than floods, lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined.
The short list of heat safety:
- drink plenty of water
- stay in the shade as much as possible
- stay inside airconditioning if possible
- do not leave pets, adults or children in a car even with the windows cracked (in 80 degree temperatures it only takes 60 minutes for the car to heat up to 123 degrees. Imagine how fast it heats up when its 100 degrees outside.)
- check on the elderly
