Parents upset over WALKING DEAD

The Parents Television Council is saying that there is too much gore on AMC's The Walking Dead for it to be given the TV-14 rating. The next rating up from that is TV-MA for mature audiences. However, the TV-14 rating by definition states parents strongly cautioned.

The Parents Television Council is furious that the zombie show gets the TV-14 rating suggesting it is suitable for teens. "Throughout its run, the AMC program The Walking Dead has featured some of the most graphic and brutally intense violence and gore imaginable," PTC president Tim Winter wrote in a letter to the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board. "Clearly, this is content appropriate to an adult-only audience, but AMC has rated every single episode of The Walking Dead as suitable for a 14-year-old child."

What are your thoughts on The Walking Dead's TV rating?

Personally I love the show. It is pretty bloody and yucky in some parts, but to appreciate the show you need to see past the zombies and watch what the show is really about and that is the breakdown of society. At the beginning of this mess the people who were alive banded together with any other strangers who were also alive. Over the course of time they become more leery of the survivors than of the zombies themselves. In desperate situations people turn on one another to survive and protect themselves and their own group.

In most cases I don't think teens would get that quite the way adults do. But that's a generalization that's not fair to make. I think parents strongly cautioned is good, but I wouldn't argue if the rating was changed to TV-MA either. Just because the rating is TV-MA doesn't mean teens won't watch it. How many kids under 17 do you know that have seen or regularly watch rated R movies?
