Striking Statistic About Infant Car Seats

car seatI was shocked when I read that 80% of infant car seats are not properly installed. When we installed our car seat bases it seemed pretty easy, but now after reading that I'm worried we missed a step or something. Luckily there are places that will check them out for you to make sure that they are safely and properly installed including most police departments.

This is the list I found when I simply googled "Where can I have my car seat inspected?"

Your hospital will provide you with safety check information too or you can call 1-866-SEAT-CHECK to find a convenient location near you.
When Josh and I were looking at car seats to put on our registry we wanted to find one that was easy to install and had the front adjustable straps. It is important that the straps fit snug, but not too snug. There should be room for your finger between the strap and baby. Don't dress baby in a snowsuit in the winter then strap them in because if you're in an accident that snowsuit will squish and the baby can come out of the seat. It's better to dress the baby in a normal outfit and wrap blankets around the strapped in baby. I didn't know this until I learned it in one of my fabulous infant safety classes through Ministry. I also learned that you shouldn't use any after market stabilizers either. Only use pieces that actually come with the car seat because they have been tested with the car seat in crash tests so they are proven to be safe.
What were the important things you were looking for when you were shopping for a car seat?
Did you load the baby up only to have the person from the hospital tell you that it was wrong?
