Today I'm thinking about what an incredible show the American Idol finale was. I told you that it wouldn't be very exciting because I didn't care who won, but the performances would be the thing to watch and I was right!
The Top 12 were back and they opened the show singing "School's Out" with Alice Cooper. They pretty much drowned him out. With the exception of the creepy kids choir it was a pretty good way to kick off the night. (Listen to the clip below)
Last year's Idol Kris Allen performed "The Truth" not a huge fan, but it was good.
Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelley sang with the Bee Gees "How Deep Is Your Love."
Michael Linche sang "Takin It To The Streets" with Michael McDonald.
Dane Cook stunk up the joint with his not funny song of the mean stuff Simon has said over the years. He did say one funny thing, "Simon, you sir have the honesty of Abe Lincoln and the charm of the guy who shot him." The producers had to bail out of it early because some crazy reject from the auditions pulled a Kanye.
Christina Aguilera performed with the ladies. It was weird seeing her since she's been laying low for a while now.
The guys performed "Maneater" and were joined by Hall & Oats for "You Make my Dreams."
Crystal Bowersox performed with Alanis Morrisette "You Oughta Know."
Carrie Underwood was awesome when she performed her latest hit, "Undo It," but was wearing a really weird metal vest.
The secret performance that was lighting up Twitter was Bret Michaels! Casey James and Bret sang "Every Rose Has It's Thorn." It gave me goose bumps to think that this guy is performing tonight and a week ago he almost died! He is scheduled to have open heart surgery in the fall.
Lee DeWyze performed with Chicago which was pretty awesome.
General Larry Platt took the Idol stage for "Pants on the Ground." It is bad enough that "Pants on the Ground" has become a nationwide phenomena that people everywhere know and sing, but they proved last night it could be worse by including William Hung.
Paula Abdul returned to bid Simon farewell and it was too long and not funny even though she was trying to be. You can see how much they really do like each other though.
Past Idol winners sang "Together We Are One," but one was missing. Where was David Cook?
Simon said his goodbyes and said he was emotional, but didn't really look like it. He gave Ryan an awkward hug and that was that.
The top 12 performed the last time with Janet Jackson who actually sang 3 songs to close out the evening of performances.
Finally the winner was announced and Lee started crying before Ryan even announced his name. Crystal said later that she knew Lee was going to win. The two seem to have a really great relationship and she seemed truly happy for him. When he was announced as the winner he even said, "Crystal I love you" and ran over and gave her a hug.
It was a very good show to wrap up a very good season. Though the ratings for the show were down this year, American Idol was still the #1 show for the 7th year in a row. With Simon's exit do you think the show's in trouble?
American Idol Executive Producer, Simon Fuller says that Season 10 will be the biggest talent search ever because not only are they doing the city searches, but they're also doing online Myspace auditions too.
We won't find out who will be replacing Simon on the judge's panel next year for quite some time. I predict that we won't know who it is until right before the auditions begin. We'll have someone new to break in next year. We broke in Ellen as a new judge this year and did such a good job she has decided to launch her own record label and has just signed her first artist: 12 yr old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance.
