The Future of Idol

Today I'm thinking about the future of American Idol.

As we know Simon Cowell will be leaving American Idol at the end of this year. Star magazine reports that producers are planning the end of the show after one more season. Execs just don't see the show carrying on without Simon. "Producers know Simon really makes the show and they feel they could go only one season with out him and the quality will suffer after that," said a source. Another insider claims Idol will run through 2012, "By that time, the show will have been on the air for more than a decade and the producers figure that's long enough."

Regardless of his decision to leave the show Simon Cowell still believes that American Idol is an important vehicle for people who have the potential to be stars, but can't get a record deal for some reason, "I mean, the idea of Carrie Underwood wandering around without a record deal is staggering when you look at what she's achieved and that's the importance of the show and it's the only reason. It's why we carry on making American Idol."

If American Idol ended would you miss it?
