Meeting Merle Haggard

bdBrooks & Dunn both admit that they got into the music business because they themselves were fans. Early on in their career, Kix Brooks recalls playing a festival that country icon Merle Haggard was also playing.

Kix wanted Haggard to sign his guitar but says he was too "chicken" to bring it over himself: "I got my tour manager to take my guitar to him and get it signed for me. And he comes back and says, 'Well Haggard's got your guitar and he says he'll sign it but you've got to come over there.' And I can remember it was like that scene in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy's walking down that hallway to see the wizard (makes wind sound). You know, walking down the hallway of his tour bus and I can see his legs back there and I can hear him playing my guitar and I was just scared to death. Of course he couldn't have been any cooler, you know 'Pretty good sounding guitar and you know what are you guys…' And before it was over with we actually kind of carried on a conversation."
