The accident happened Thursday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. when a woman traveling north on Woodland Drive was unable to stop as she approached Stevens Street, apparently due to brake failure, according to Rhinelander Police Chief Mike Steffes. The Tahoe traveled into Stevens Street, collided with the southbound bus operated by Bowens Bus Service and came to rest against a tree on the opposite side of the road. The bus spun sideways and flipped. The bus was carrying only one passenger, a young boy, who escaped the ordeal with no major injuries.
“The child is doing very good,” Steffes said. “He was very brave today.”
Steffes said the woman driving the Tahoe said she hadn’t driven it in several days and only noticed brake problems as she approached the intersection. He said it was lucky the incident didn’t turn out worse.
“We were very fortunate,” Steffes said.
The drivers of both vehicles were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander.
Trista Walkowski claims her mother, Today's Great Country 101 9 listener, Joyce Alsteen, was the bus driver. She said, "While medical personnel were trying to put a collar on her neck, do you have any idea what she was trying to do? GET A BONUS KEYWORD. The accident had already happened and she was hanging in air by her seatbelt and happened to hear the radio when she heard the sound for a bonus keyword ... Needless to say she was a little preoccupied and didn't quite catch it. (and thought it may be a little wierd telling the EMT's to 'SHHHHH I'm trying to get the keyword.' I'm trying to get the keyword. Any chance she can get it? She needs a pat on the back too for a brave job and the only passenger a little boy too. Everyone was fine in the accident!! Thanks."
Trista, I was on the air @ 2:30 Thursday afternoon. I don't remember the Bonus Keyword I announced on the air, but I'm giving your mom, Joyce, 5000 WDEZ Club bonus points.
