What is Vocal Fry...and why do we care?

Posted by Bryan Scott on

"Vocal fry" has become popular among young women in the US.

Research found that college-age women end sentences in the lowest vocal register, a creaky vibration called vocal fry, possibly to broadcast themselves as part of a social group.

The low, creaky vibrations are used by pop singers, such as Britney Spears, who slip vocal fry into their music as a way to reach low notes and add style.

And while vocal fry once was considered a speech disorder, it is now a language fad among young women.
