It wasn't just another camp practice. You can probably count on one hand how many sessions Aaron Rodgers has missed but when the team trotted onto Ray Nitschke Field under tropical conditiions, number 12 wasn't among them. We had to wait until after the workout to learn why. Mike McCarthy said Aaron was ill and at home but he fully expected his MVP quarterback to practice on Wednesday. When asked if he's concerned the bug might sweep through the locker room, McCarthy quipped, "We all have families, and we're all aware there's something going around and he's probably one of thousands at home with a head cold, he'll be fine."
Without Rodgers, the three amigos behind him on the depth chart got extra reps. Graham Harrell had the luxury of getting first dibs with the starting offense, although he shared several team reps with Vince Young. B.J. Coleman continued to run with the backups and operated the scout team. Regrettably, there were an awful lot of balls that hit the ground. Even McCarthy admitted there were some rough plays but that's why you evaluate practice film. The only extended series with the starters came in the final period, a no huddle drive, engineered, sort of, by Harrell. He was faced with a 4th and short but converted with a short pass to Jarrett Boykin. Harrell finished the series without scoring and he completed just three of seven passes.
It's looking more and more like Don Barclay is you're starting right tackle. After spending much of camp working at guard, both tackles and even center, which was a shotgun snapping nightmare, Barclay is now practicing exclusively at right tackle, with the first teamers.
New to the injury list today was defensive back Loyce Means with an ankle sprain. Casey Hayward and Datone Jones got more reps in team drills today and if they hold up in the only padded practice of the week tomorrow, they'll go against the Seahawks.
The temperature hit 84 degrees at the end of practice, it could push 90 on Wednesday but McCarthy said he's OK working in the heat. He's expecting a hot game in Cincinnati at the end of September and the team really hasn't been stressed weather wise all summer.
