The weather has turned a lot colder here in Michigan the last couple of weeks. I have had to bundle up more often when I go out to run and that was no different today as I ran in the Trick or Trail 5K fun run at the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.
I did not wear a costume like a lot of the other runners did for today's run. It looked like everyone was having a lot of fun as they should. The morning started out cloudy, windy, and cold as I picked up my bib and shirt. I met up with Jeremy and his wife Ashley along with their kids and brother-in-law Craig. Jeremy was dressed up as Captain America and his kids were both Iron man.
Other costumes I saw were a bee and ladybug pair, a dog with a shark costume, a lady with a fish tank, and a little kid dressed as Mario to name a few.
I had decided since this was a FUN RUN and no age group awards were being given out and their were no official results I was going to take it easy and not run hard. My friend Brandon and I decided this after running last year's Run through the Lights as we saw no point to running hard since it was just a fun run.
The sun came out right before we started to warm us up a little. So I ran with Ashley, Jeremy, and Craig and Ashley stated we were running her pace. We were supposed to keep track of how many skeletons we saw along the trail and then tally the number up and enter our guess when we finished. I forgot to do this.
We cruised along the trail as we talked with each other back-and-forth as we passed a few runners and we checked out the colors on the trees. Once we were out of the forest part of the trail we were out on the trail by Westnedge and ran about a half mile down before we turned around and headed back toward the finish. Jeremy said he was going to use he Captain America shield to take people out during the race, but I was the only one he almost took out near the end of the race. It was of course by accident and a funny incident. We ran the course in 25:23 and Jeremy said it was Ashley's best 5K time, so a great thing for her.
I grabbed a drink, fruit bar, and cookie after the race and cooled down before I took off for the day. Kyle Lewis and Kalamazoo County Parks did a great job putting on this race. I participated in it the first year and missed last year, but I will be back again next year and this time I will wear a costume.
