  • And the winner is...

    Posted by Terry Stevens

Tensions run high in the Christmas Combat Area.  After days of intense, nog-soaked competition, two of Christmas villainy's most villainous villains will step into the ring to answer this question:

WHO IS THE BADDEST CHRISTMAS BADDIE OF ALL TIME?

For The Bumble, this is all about revenge.  Betrayed by his animal instincts and outwitted by The Grinch in an earlier round, he has sworn not to give the Green One a second opportunity to exploit his ravenous appetite as a weakness.  Plus, he totally ate a big meal before the fight.

For The Grinch, this is all about sealing the deal.  So far, the Green One has beaten a dictator, a concept, and the very beast he faces tonight to make it to the finals.  All he has to do now is beat The Bumble one more time to complete the streak and win the entire tournament.

The competitors enter the squared circle.  The bell rings and quicker than you can blink, The Bumble charges over to The Grinch and devours him in one mighty chomp leaving nothing but a single too-tight shoe behind.

The crowd is shocked as The Bumble raises his paws and howls in victory!

No, wait.  That's not victory.  That's pain.

The Bumble lowers his paws to his abdomen as doubles over as his taste buds and stomach send the following signals too his brain:

"Hey Bumble-buddy. Your stomach and tongue were just realizing that you ate something that tastes like a combination of a bad banana with a greasy black peel, a brain full of spiders, a soul with garlic, a heart full of unwashed socks, a three decker saurkraut and toadstool sandwich wiht arsenic sauce.  Bottom line, whatever you just ate stinks, stanks, stunks.  Also, you're going to throw up...right...about...NOW!"

The Grinch reappears in the ring in the most disgusting manner you can imagine.  The Bumble cannot hold onto the contents of his stomach long enough to continue the match much less remain concious.  The Bumble hits the mat and The Grinch hits the showers before he heads off to rob Who-Ville blind!

    Total Percent M F Answer
214 64.5% 60.4% 66.1%  The Grinch (from How The Grinch Stole Christmas!)
    118 35.5% 39.6% 33.9%  The Bumble (from "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer")

    WINNER:  The Grinch by KO.

    XMAS BRACKET 6

Thanks to everyone who participated in this.  I hope you had as much fun playing this game as I did.  My co-workers, family and I had downright serious discussions about who would win in each round of the competition.  As soon as I realized that The Grinch  = Batman + The Incredible Hulk, I felt that his victory was assured.

Hope you had a great Christmas!

I can sum up the latest round of competition in two words:

    BRUTE FORCE.

On one side of the battleground stands "The Abominable One", a Yeti that shreds opponents into so much confetti.  The Bumble.

On the other, a military mastermind.  A heartless despot bent on ridding the world of toys.  Burgermeister Meisterburger and his legions.

The savage one versus the civilized many.

The bells rings and the brutality begins.

Burgermeister Meisterburger throws everything he has at The Bumble.  Swords, spears, arrows, battle axes, bullets, bombs, tac nukes, it all comes flying at The Bumble along with thousands of troops.

    None of it matters.

The Bumble has been hunted by humans since it was old enough to tear them to bits.

The Burgermeister's men are no different.

Meisterburger, knowing that he cannot rule without his vital organs intact, chooses an honorable surrender.

    Total Percent M F Answer
119 45.1% 54.1% 40.8%  Burgermeister Meisterburger (from Santa Claus Is Comin To Town)
    145 54.9% 45.9% 59.2%  The Bumble (from "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer")

    WINNER:  The Bumble by Submission.

Which brings us to the finals:

    XMAS BRACKET 5

It's a grudge match for sure.  The Bumble, while at base, a savage also possesses enough shrewd intellect not to fall for The Grinch's misdirection a second time.

The Grinch, on the other hand, has a gigantic bag of tricks at his disposal.  Plus, it has already been determined that The Grinch is a mix of Batman and The Incredible Hulk, two of the most unbeatable characters in comic book canon.  So, you know, he has that going for him too.

Who will win?  That's up to you!  Vote here.

Because this is the final match, the voting period will be extended.  Voting will end at 0900 on 12/28/09.  Results will be posted shortly thereafter.

What an incredible match we had yesterday!  Every expectation was exceeded!

Vegas experts were banking on a swift victory in the first minute of the fight for Burgermeister Meisterburger.  Reason being that the Burgermeister's troops would overwhelm Heat Miser much as they overwhelmed Professor Hinkle.

    They thought wrong.

Unlike Professor Hinkle, Heat Miser isn't a mage.  No, Heat Miser's power are elemental.  He is no less than a force of nature, personified!  Whereas Hinkle runs out of spells, Heat Miser can just keep flinging fireballs.

    And fling he did.

Wave after wave of Burgermeister Meisterburger's men fell to the firey wrath of Heat Miser.  It was pure chaos!  Bullets, artillery, and blasts of flame were flying everywhere for a good hour with no sign of stopping!

Vegas and Burgermeister Meisterburger's men weren't enjoying this one bit.

In an intense combat situation, a phenomena occurs called "the fog of war".  In this chaotic state, perceptions are blurred, and details get lost in the hail of gunfire and wanton destruction.

Due to the "fog of war" factor, reports of a skinny blue man sneaking up behind Heat Miser and knocking him out cold with a steel chair cannot be confirmed.

What can be confirmed is that at the end of the fight, Burgermeister Meisterburger's hand was raised in victory.

    Total Percent M F Answer
116 45.8% 42.5% 47.4%  Heat Miser (from The Year Without A Santa Claus)
137 54.2% 57.5% 52.6%  Burgermeister Meisterburger (from Santa Claus Is Comin To Town)

    WINNER:  Burgermeister Meisterburger by KO.

    To the bracket!

    XMAS BRACKET 4

This next match is going to be another close one.  Burgermeister Meisterburger has the numbers, but The Bumble has the fact that he is the most physically dominating competitor in this tournament.  Who will win?  That's up to you!  Vote here.

Voting will end at 9am Christmas Eve.  Then, the final match of the competition will begin shortly after.  Voting for that will continue until 9am on 12/28 with the winner being announced later that day.

In other Keyword news, WDEZ will be taking a break from Keyword stuff starting at Noon on Christmas Eve until Midnight on 12/26/09.  This will keep you from having to say things to your in-laws and outlaws like "Shut up!  I'm trying to hear my Keyword!"  Think of it as our little way of contributing to Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Humankind this holiday season.

That also means that there will be no Keyword Comedy Club this week, nor will there be TTPKs on Thursday and Friday night.

  • TV CHRISTMAS SPECIAL VILLAIN SMACKDOWN SHOWDOWN TOURNAMENT (now with prettier brackets)!

    Posted by Terry Stevens

We're getting down to the nitty-gritty in this competition!  Only two rounds remain until the finale on Christmas Eve!

Yesterday's competition may have featured fewer matches, but they were no less intense in their Yuletide savagery.  Let's get to the results:

    Total Percent M F Answer
    104 36% 39% 34.8%  Commercialism (from A Charlie Brown Christmas)
185 64% 61% 65.2%  Heat Miser (from The Year Without A Santa Claus)

Still smarting from its loss to The Grinch in the prior round, Commercialism came into the losers' bracket with something to prove.  His opponent, Heat Miser, entered the match following a controversial win over his brother.  Just to keep things fair, Al Gore was banned from ringside for this round of combat.

Commercialism entered the fray with an advertising blitz that would make a Madison Avenue ad exec drool adn our sales department swoon.  Billboards, television, print, online and radio ads buffeted Heat Miser non-stop.  Unfortunately for Commercialism, its efforts met the same fate as anything else that meets fire.  They burned.

With every blow countered by the all-consuming flames of Heat Miser, Commercialism taps out.

    WINNER:  Heat Miser by Submission.

    Total Percent M F Answer
101 34.8% 37.8% 33.7%  Professor Hinkle (from Frosty The Snowman)
189 65.2% 62.2% 66.3%  Burgermeister Meisterburger (from Santa Claus Is Comin To Town)

Magic versus military was the order of the day for this match up.  Professor Hinkle started slinging spells out of the gate.  For the first few minutes of the fight, Burgermeister Meisterburger's troops had their Abras Cadabraed and their Hocuses Pocused.

But then, Hinkle ran into the same problem as every other magic user.

You see, magic users have a finite amount of spells at their disposal.  Once they cast one, it's gone until they can get into their library of spells and re-commit it to memory.

Hinkle is skilled in the dark arts, but eventually, the sheer number of troops at Burgermeister Meisterburger's disposal overwhelm the hapless mage, leading to a decisive victory for the toy hater.

    WINNER:  Burgermeister Meisterburger by KO.

Our next match was easily, the most contested fight of the day.  "The Abominable One" vs. "The Mean Green" was an igloo-burner to be sure.

The Bumble was all claws, fangs and savagery from the get go.  The Grinch deftly dodged the opening salvo until finally, The Great White Onslaught proved to be too much adn The Grinch found himself on the losing end of a spinning backpaw that send him reeling.

Enter The Grinch's "Hulk-Out" moment.  Heart swells 3 sizes, super-strength is gained and all of a sudden, The Bumble is fighting someone as strong as he is.

The two titans trade earth shattering blows for close to an hour before finally, exhausted from the struggle, they both fall to the mat.

The ref starts the 10 count.

Both competitors are standing!  The crowd is going wild!

The ref gives the signal for the bout to continue.  The Bumble and The Grinch share an icy stare across the ring.  They both know whoever scores the next blow will likely win the match.

The Bumble, roaring with bloodlust, charges across the ring!  The Grinch yells "Now!" and as The Bumble comes within a claw's swipe of laying The Grinch low, he stops...

And sniffs the air until his senses lead him to a sleigh full of fresh reindeer steaks being pulled around the ring by The Grinch's faithful companion Max, The Dog!

The Bumble crashes through the ring barrier chasing the now fleeing Max and his steak right out of the arena!

The Grinch knew all along that physically, he could never take out The Bumble.  His only hope was to make the beast work up an appetite and then use that weakness to make him lose the match.

One 20 count later, and The Grinch, proving once again that he is a combination of Batman and The Incredible Hulk, moves on while The Bumble falls to the losers bracket.

    TotalPercentMFAnswer
    114 39.4% 42% 38.5%  The Bumble (from "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer")
175 60.6% 58% 61.5%  The Grinch (from How The Grinch Stole Christmas!)

WINNER:  The Grinch by Count Out.

That leaves our bracket looking like this:

    XMAS BRACKET 3

Yeah, I know.  I finally figured out that Photoshop was a better tool than MS word for making the brackets.  I'm a noob, okay?

The next two rounds of competition will finish out the loser's bracket and determine who will face The Grinch in the finale on Christmas Eve!

Will The Heat Miser burn up The Bugermeister?  Will either of them be able to beat the Bumble?  Can ANYONE beat The Grinch?  The answer to these questions are to you!  Vote here.

The competition was fierce.  Victory would only come at the expense of blood, sweat and tears.  But, enough about the Packers loss to the thrice-darned Steelers.

    Let’s talk Xmas Villain Smackdown!

Here are the results from this past weekend’s round of competition:

    Total Percent M F Answer
205 62.7% 70% 59.5%  The Bumble (from Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer)
122 37.3% 30% 40.5%  Professor Hinkle (from Frosty The Snowman)

Before Professor Hinkle can even say the word "Hocus", The Bumble is on him like white on a Yeti.  One flurry of claws and fangs later and The Bumble sends the Professor to the losers bracket.

    WINNER:  BUMBLE by KO

256 78% 83.2% 75.8%  The Grinch (from How The Grinch Stole Christmas!)
    72 22% 16.8% 24.2%  Commercialism (from A Charlie Brown Christmas)

Going into this, the Grinch knew he had his work cut out for him.  You see, The Grinch is kind of like Batman.  He beats his opponents with guile and gadgets, as opposed to brute force.

However, Commercialism is not a physical opponent.  Oh, no.  No clever disguise or tricks of gadgetry would save The Grinch here.

Commercialism came out of the gate swinging, with Red Tag Specials, catchy jingles and every other marketing technique in its arsenal.  Battered, beaten and bloody, it looked like this would be The Grinch's curtain call until...

You see, The Grinch is also kind of like The Incredible Hulk.  He's green, and when emotionally distraught, is capable of great feats of strength.  Plus, his heart grows three sizes, rendering it impervious to Commercialism's wiles.  Commercialism taps out and sulks off to the loser's bracket.

    WINNER:  The Grinch by Submission

    Total Percent M F Answer
160 48.8% 53% 46.9%  Snow Miser (from The Year Without A Santa Claus)
168 51.2% 47% 53.1%  Heat Miser (from The Year Without A Santa Claus)

The grudge match to end all grudge matches, Heat Miser and Snow Miser gave us the most evenly matched fight of the competition so far.  Blasts of fire and ice flew through the air fast and furious.  Eventually, the combination of the brother's powers blanketed the arena in steam so thick, it looked like they were fighting in a fog bank.  When the mist finally cleared, a weary Heat Miser stood victorious.  Al Gore stood just outside the ring whistling innocently while holding a dented steel chair behind his back.  Alas, outside interference couldn't be proven by Snow Miser's team, so Heat Miser advances.

WINNER:  Heat Miser by Global Warming

    Total Percent M F Answer
188 57.3% 63.4% 54.6%  Burgermeister Meisterburger (from Santa Claus Is Comin To Town)
140 42.7% 36.6% 45.4%  The Cossack King Kubla Kraus (from Jack Frost)

Unlike the earlier mano-a-mano matches of the competition, this one would be fought by armies.  Burgermeister Meisterburger's legion of mortal men versus the undying robot army of King Kubla Kraus.  Kraus's army got off to a strong start.  His robots shrugged off the bullets and blades of Meisterburger's men driving them back to the Burgermeister's base.  Kraus was confident that victory was a few clanks away.

He forgot one teensy item, though.

Robots, at their core, are large toys.  What does Burgermeister Meisterburger hate more than anything else?  Toys.  What does he train his men in the art of destroying?  Toys.

Kraus, being a godless commie, overestimates the power of the state vs. the ingenuity of man, and watches in horror as his robot forces are flanked by the Burgermeister's reserve forces.  Meisterburger's men dismantle the robots in short order and then march on to their next challenge.

    WINNER:  Burgermeister Meisterburger by TKO

Now, onto the next series of Terry's Bonus Point Polls!

    That's right.  I said series.

PRESENTING:  THE FIRST EVER TV CHRISTMAS SPECIAL VILLAIN SMACKDOWN SHOWDOWN TOURNAMENT!

(Gotta find a shorter title for that)

8 of TV Christmas Specials more diabolical villains will face off double elimination tournament style over the next few days on Terry's Bonus Point Poll!  The winners and loser brackets have already been set via WDEZ's Facebook Fan Page.

    Here are the competitors:

    1)  Snow-Miser (from "The Year Without A Santa Claus").

Ruler of the icy northern regions of the earth, Snow Miser is able to convert matter to solid ice and even restore it to its original state.  Additional powers include making mini-me-esque clones of himself to do his bidding.

    2)  The Bumble (from "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer")

A bundle of snow-white savagry, The Bumble brings pure, brute strength to the competition (and some sweet dance moves if the above vid is to be believed).

    3)  Heat Miser (from "The Year Without A Santa Claus")

Ruler of the warmer regions of the earth, Heat Miser is the brother and arch-nemesis of Snow Miser.  Heat Misers powers are fire based.  If it can be hurt by heat, he can hurt it.

    4)  Professor Hinkle (from "Frosty The Snowman")

A magician by trade, Professor Hinkle is versed in the dark arts and battles using an enchanted hat and rabbit sidekick.

    5)  The Grinch (from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas!")

A master of disguise as well as breaking and entering.  He's a cuddly as a cactus, charming as an eel.  The four words that best describe him, and I quote, "Stink Stank, Stunk, HARDCORE".  Easily, the craftiest player in the competition.

    6)  Burgermeister Meisterburger (from "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town")

A hard hearted tyrant who commands of a vast legion of troops, Burgermeister Meister battles his opponents with pure military brutality.  Heaven help you if he sees you with a toy.

    7)  Commercialism (from "A Charlie Brown Christmas")

Not the most violent villains in the competition, Commercialism fights a very indirect battle, lulling his opponent into a false sense of security.  One minute you're singing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing".  The next thing you know, you're singing "Hark! The Herald Registers Ring".  An isidious competitor, this one.

    8)  The Cossack King, Kubla Kraus (from "Jack Frost")

Another military brute, The Cossack King, Kubla Kraus commands a legion of robot soldiers.  A commie, he is everything that Christmas isn't.

  • Who would win in a fight between...?

    Posted by Terry Stevens

Superman vs. Batman?  Old news.  (BTW Batman FTW.)

Vampires vs. Werewolves?  Covered it already.  (You picked Werewolves by a narrow margin.)

The fictional characters that are facing off now?  Christmas Special villians.

I'm setting the Bracket on WDEZ's Facebook Fan Page now.  Once the bracket is set, the villians will fight it out tournament-style in a series of Terry's Bonus Point Polls that will start on Friday.

    May the best villain win!

By the way, a big thanks to Dave and Carol for the Christmas cookies.  My insulin pump is working overtime to keep up.

  • The Second Answer

    Posted by Terry Stevens

Terry's Triple Play Keyword was one of those rare ones that could have two different answers.  If you've been feverishly punching in the word "line", sorry.  That's not the answer I'm looking for.

Copywriting has a lot of that multiple answer stuff going on too.  There are multiple solutions to every Copy Request I receive.  The obvious one comes up first.  That's the one whose approach comes as no surprise to anyone, a decidedly "Meh" commercial.  It's the second or third answer that tends to have the better solution.  A take that hasn't been taken before, a strange turn of phrase, whatever it is, it's where the magic lies.

That's why the first draft exists, to get all of the lame ideas out of the way so the good one can make itself clear.

By the way, "the first draft" concept applies to a lot more than writing.

That second or third answer takes some time to get at.  In today's "GOTTA HAVE IT NOW!" world, I fear that the lack of patience for the second or third answer is robbing us of a bit of magic, a bit of creativity, leading us to shortsighted solutions.

The bean counter sees that time spent looking for a second or third answer as frivolous.  "Why bother?  We already have an answer!  Let's just go with it." he/she bellows, losing sight of the fact that a particular right answer isn't necessarily the best right answer.

May you have the time you need to get the right answer.

Your TTPK Hint for today is:  "Your camera has one."

Your Blog Keyword for today is "line".  It's good for 250 WDEZ Club Points until 1700 on 12/15/09.

The results of the latest Terry's Bonus Point Poll are in:

Terry's Bonus Point Poll 420 Respondents

    126 Males

    294 Females

What kind of wireless/cellular phone service do you use?

    Total Percent M F Answer

    49 11.7% 11.9% 11.6% Pre-paid/pay as you go

    337 80.2% 80.2% 80.3% Contract-based plan

    34 8.1% 7.9% 8.2% I don't own or use a cellular phone

When it comes to wireless phones, you're in to commitment.  I'm more of a pre-pay/pay-as-you-go guy.  The only reason I have a wireless phone is so Mrs. Stevens can reach me at work after hours and for emergency type situations.

A new year is almost upon us.  A new year with new opportunities.  That leads to my next Terry's Bonus Point Poll Question.  Hop over to my page to take the poll and score some more points!

Two more items before I wrap this up.
