  • You have to see this video

This 8 month old baby was born deaf and this video shows his reaction to hearing his mother's voice for the first time after receiving a cochlear implant. This is the sweetest thing, but it will probably make you cry.

    mia sharing

Mia is good at sharing with her cousin Cole. Unfortunately Cole isn't good at sharing with her. I'm sure when Mia is his age (3) she won't share well either.

    mia says goodbye to lizzy

The best part about the holidays is family getting together. The worst is having to leave. This is a picture of Mia saying goodbye to her cousin Lizzy. She tried to crawl right in the carseat with her.

    family

Our Thanksgiving is all about family. Growing up my cousin Todd from Ohio would spend every summer with us so he is like an older brother to me. He and his family come up and celebrate Thanksgiving with us. His daughters are so great with the little kids. His older daughter, Lexi (in this picture with Mia) is about to turn 13 and she is an awesome babysitter! Mia loves both of Todd's girls and she watches Todd so intently. Kids are drawn to him for some reason.

Lexi's younger sister Faith joined us for the Wisconsin Rapids parade on Wednesday night because in the city where they live they don't have parades or don't go to them so it was a pretty cool experience for her. She loved watching Mia wave and smile and laugh at all the floats (she's never seen a parade before either). It was pretty special for all of us.

We have a couple more days of family fun before they head back to Ohio and you better believe we're going to enjoy every minute of it.

Hope your Thanksgiving was as good as mine.

  • Mia is working on her top teeth

    Mia Teeth

Mia is working on her top teeth now. I am excited because once she has them she will be able to eat so many more things. Right now I'm trying to keep things soft and mushy since she only has her 2 bottom teeth it makes it harder for her to take bites of things. I know she'd love those Gerber fruit strips, but I'm afraid to give them to her until she has those top teeth.

When should baby go to the dentist for the first time?

  • Sick baby

My poor baby is sick again. Yesterday she had a fever of 103, but after giving her some baby tylenol it started going down. She was a little warmer than normal all last night and even today and she's been very sleepy and cuddly. The baby sitter says she's a little stuffy today too. I'm wondering if this could be teething though 103 seems like a pretty high fever for teething. Perhaps she's really sick. She hasn't been around any sick people lately so I don't know where she would've gotten it from.

When should you take a baby to the doctor for a fever?

  • Christmas is coming!

    christmas

With Christmas right around the corner I've been thinking a lot about what I want Mia to get out of it and I don't mean toys. I feel like so much of Christmas is about the presents, but when I think back to Christmas as a child I remember the important things. I remember playing Christmas records and dancing around and singing along with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra while decorating our house. I remember making christmas ornaments out of popcicle sticks and Elmer's glue. I remember going to bed early then sneaking into my brothers room in the wee hours of morning (about the same time I get up now for work) and saying, "Santa came!" The two of us would sneak into the living room as quiet as could be to try to get a peek at what Santa brought, but no matter how quiet we were my dad always heard us and sent us back to bed. I remember calling our whole family on Christmas day wishing them all a Merry Christmas from afar. Then family friends would come over and we would all crowd around the table for a huge meal. After our dinner was cleaned up we would play board games until it was time for bed.

No matter how hard I try I can't tell you what presents I got any of those Christmases. The things that stuck with me are the traditions and the family time. I want Mia to appreciate those kinds of things. She is so lucky to have so much family so nearby. That doesn't mean I'm not going to get her presents, but I don't want that to be the only thing she's excited about.

Does it make me a bad mom that I don't want to shower my child with every gift she could dream of?

  • Mia is happy to be 1

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

mia happyMia is happy to be 1. Yesterday we sang happy birthday to her twice and she looked at us like we were crazy people. But then we had cupcakes and then she thought we were great!

We go in for her 1 year wellness check today. According to her motor skills questionnaire she's on track (not walking yet, but close).

I'm excited to see the doctor today to find out how we'll be changing her diet. We have already started feeding her lots of regular food like we eat, but she only has 2 bottom teeth so we are still very careful about what we give her making sure it is really soft. We are going to ask when we should be weaning Mia off the bottle and when we should stop giving her formula.

When did you take your baby off formula?

When did your baby stop using a bottle?
