  • When do we move Mia to a toddler bed?

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

toddler bedMia is 16 months old today. We are weaning her off the bottle. She is stuck on prenap bottle. One a day I guess I can deal with that for now. The pacifier has been tougher. She has them stashed away in hiding places beause even if we take them away from her she has one in her mouth two minutes later. She doesn't use it all the time, but she's far from ditching it completely. Any suggestions?

We're thinking about converting her bed to a toddler bed soon. At what age did you move your child from a crib to a toddler bed?

  • Could your paint be making your baby cry?

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

paintIf you watch DIY shows you'll learn that wall colors are very important for your well being. If you have a baby that cries a lot and has a hard time sleeping you may want to take a look at the wall color. Yellow is cheerful and warm, but it also gives you energy so it makes it hard to sleep. Yellow is a great color for a kitchen, but not a bedroom especially not a nursery.

Good colors for a nursery include:

    BLUE - camlming, means serenity

    PINK - also calming

    GREEN - tranquil

LAVENDER - calms and allows for relaxation

When we moved into our house we tried to paint each room appropriate colors. We painted the bathrooms and kitchen bright and bold colors. Our bedroom is a soft green and we painted what we always intended to be the nursery blue. Our spare room is the same neutral color as our living room and our hallway and stairwell are the same cream color as the office. Now that we've been in the house for almost 9 years we're thinking it's time for a few fresh coats so we're trying to figure out what colors will be good for the upgrade.

    How often do you paint?

  • My lovey dovey baby

    mia lizzy

Mia is my lovey dovey baby. She loves giving hugs and kisses to her cousins. This weekend we were at my parents' house and my brother and his family were there also, when Mia got out of the bath her daddy was holding my brother's daughter Lizzy who is 6 months younger than Mia. Mia walked right over there and put her hands up to daddy, and everyone thought it was because she was jealous that her daddy was holding another baby, but really she wanted to get up there to give Lizzy hugs and kisses. It was so adorable!

  • Naptime

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

Remember when baby slept more than she was awake? Remember how exciting it was when she was awake more often? 12 months later you wish she'd take a nap so you can get something done or you just want to sit down for minute instead of constantly chasing her around the house?

Here is a chart of how naptime changes with age.

Age Nighttime Sleep Daytime Sleep * Total Sleep
    1 month 8 8 (inconsistent) 16
    3 months 10 5 (3) 15
    6 months 11 3 1/4 (2) 14 1/4
    9 months 11 3 (2) 14
    12 months 11 1/4 2 1/2 (2) 13 3/4
    18 months 11 1/4 2 1/4 (1) 13 1/2
    2 years 11 2 (1) 13
    3 years 10 1/2 1 1/2 (1) 12
*Note: number of naps in parentheses

Does your child fit this chart? My daughter takes between 1 and 2 naps a day. The length of time she's asleep varies from day to day.

Sleep expert Jodi Mindell author of Sleeping Through the Night, claims that most children are not getting enough sleep. To find out if your child is one of them ask yourself these questions:

    • Does your child fall asleep almost every time he's in a car?
    • Do you have to wake your child almost every morning?
    • Does your child seem cranky, irritable, or overtired during the day?
    • On some nights, does your child seem to crash much earlier than his usual bedtime?
If you answered yes to any of these questions your child doesn't get enough sleep.
    My answers:
    • YES, but if I were riding in the back seat of the car in a reclined position in a seat that comfortable for 40 minutes or more I would fall asleep too!
    • YES, but Josh has to get up and get ready for work starting at 4:45 and be out of the house before 6. She would sleep until 6:45 or 7am everyday if left to her own devices.
    • NO
    • YES, on the rare occasion she will start acting super tired by 6:30 instead of her usual 7:30, but we all have those days right? There's no way we'd be able to get her to bed every night at 6:30 or 7.
Okay so it turns out my daughter is sleep deprived. Sleep deprived toddlers are usually more irritable or crankier, though Mia seems pretty happy most of the time. They may have a hard time concentrating during playtime and may appear more active to try to keep themselves awake.
As a parent what do you do when you know your child is overtired?
  • Playtime

cole supermanMy 3 year old nephew wanted to play dress up with mommy. He makes a pretty handsome Clark Kent/Superman :)

When his baby sister is sleeping he gets mommy all to himself so it's time to play his favorite games. I think mommy likes it just as much as he does.

What are your favorite games to play with your children?

  • This is how I babysit

    Hayden and Mia

I got this picture yesterday from my sister with the caption "This is how I babysit. LOL." My nearly 6 year old nephew, Hayden, didn't have school yesterday so he got to play with his little sister and cousin Mia all day. Mia likes to dump out the toy bin so Hayden climbed in it. Well, Mia LOVES Hayden and whenever he's around she wants to do everything that he's doing so she tried climbing in it with him. What fun it is to be a kid!

Mia is the oldest girl and Hayden is the oldest boy in the family and they have a special relationship. It's so fun to see them together. They don't know how lucky they are to be able to see each other so often. I didn't have the luxury of growing up around my cousins.

My cousin Todd from Ohio did come stay with us every summer while we were growing up. He and I are about the same amount of years apart as Hayden and Mia. He's like an older brother to me which was pretty cool since I was the oldest in my family. He and I are still close even though we live so far apart. I was the only cousin in his wedding and he was the only cousin in mine. I hope that Mia and Hayden always stay this close.

Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, 37 and hubby actor Josh Duhmel, 40 both tweeted happy news this morning, they're expecting!

"Josh & Me & BABY makes three!!! #mylovelybabybump," she wrote. He tweeted, "Fergie and Me and BABY makes three. #MyLovelyBabyBump." Both posting this adorable composite pic.

There have been speculation for weeks that Fergie was rockin a baby bump. I love that they confirmed it together instead of the way Kanye and Kim did it.

In case you missed it Kanye announced it on stage during one of his shows while Kim was in the audience.

Congratulations Fergie, Josh and baby pea.

  • Steve Martin is a father!

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

steve martin67 year old actor Steve Martin is a first time father! Martin and his 41 year old wife just had their first child! There are no details available as to the sex of the baby or even when the baby arrived, but sources say it was sometime in December.

TMZ caught the actor/comedian working out to get in shape or maybe just stay healthy to keep up with the newborn soon to be busy toddler.

Could you imagine being a parent for the first time at the age of 67?

My cousin was in her late 40s when she had her first child and even that seems a bit too old to me. There are so many complications that are dangerous to both mother and baby beyond a certain age. But I suppose if you want to be a parent bad enough you'll take those risks.

How old is too old to start having children?
