  • Mia and the sippy cup

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

MiaAt 10 months old Mia should be using a sippy cup. We quickly learned that she doesn't like apple juice. We put a little apple juice in the cup filled mostly with water, but she didn't like it so we tried just plain water and that was better. She tends to just spill the cup everywhere or just chew on the spout without drinking any. Perhaps there is a better cup that we can use because this is not going well.

Does anyone have any tips that could help me help Mia use a sippy cup? Do you have a favorite brand or style sippy cup that doesn't leak all over?

    Mia and Riley

Mia (Left) and her cousin Riley (Right) are best buds. I love that my sister can watch Mia a few times a week. Mia and my sister's daughter Riley are 5 months apart and super close. Whenever Mia sees Riley she reaches right out for her. I am so excited for these girls to grow up together.

    Mia feeds herself

Mia is 10 months old now so she's ready to eat small soft chunks of solid food. I cut up some avacado for her yesterday and cooked up some apples. I peeled, cored, and sliced apples and boiled them for 15 minutes then let them cool a little and cut them up into small chunks. She thought it was pretty great. I think she felt like a big shot.

I also made some carrots for her. I cut the carrots into small chunks then steamed them until they were soft and mushy. She doesn't have teeth yet so I have to make the food soft enough for her to mush up with her tongue.

  • Teething Remedies

amber necklaceMy nieces are both teething right now, they are 5 and 6 months younger than Mia and Mia still has no teeth. I can feel that they're close though. My sister in law wanted my mom to pick up some teething tablets for my niece Lizzy on Saturday. I had never heard of such a thing. My sister jumped in and said she had heard of them, but never tried them. Apparently they are supposed to numb the baby's mouth as they dissolve. I've tried a few different things so far to help Mia through her teething, but never teething tablets. Our go to is Baby Orajel which is the most popular thing on the market I'm told.

I looked into other teething remedies that I may or may not have heard of and this is a list I've comprised. If you have any others I'd love to know about them. Please comment below.

    • Amber Teething Necklaces-apparently the natural amber acts as a natural pain reliever.
    • Homeopathic Medicine
    • Cold Wash Cloth-recommended by many listeners
    • Cold Raw Carrot or Celery-I'd be afraid of a chunk breaking off & her choking on it
    • Frozen Fruits and Veggies-same concerns as above
    • Teething Pacifier-Mia has one, but doesn't care for it much
    • Vibrating Teethers
    • Gripe Water-I thought this was for gas
    • Frozen Bagel-again with the choking concerns
    • Infant Tylenol
    • Cuddles-this is my favorite :)
  • Pregorexia

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

angelinaA recent article in the Canadian press credits celebrity moms for a new unhealthy phenomenon known as "pregorexia."

Preganant women see pictures of celebrities who are expecting who haven't put on much weight and think they should look like that. They feel so badly about their changing bodies that they develop an eating disorder. It carries over after they have their baby too. When they see celebrities bounce back to their superskinny selves only a few months or in some cases weeks after giving birth they think they should be donning their pre-pregnancy clothes that quickly too.

These women need to be reminded that the reality is that these women have nannies and trainers and dieticians that allows them to get back to the Hollywood ideal. In real life it takes women about 9 months to get back to "normal" some women take longer and some are lucky enough to dump the extra pounds sooner. Every woman is different and it is never ever fair to compare yourself to celebrities.

And not all celebrities are like Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham. I was pregnant along with Jessica Simpson and Hillary Duff and I was happy to see that the two of them struggled with their weight as much as I did. Jessica is still workin it off and doing weight watchers to help her get back to her pre-baby size.

The weight is very hard to deal with when you are pregnant, but you have to remember that gaining weight is good for your baby. If you're starving yourself you're starving your baby too! As long as you are eating healthy and only increasing your calories by 300-500 a day you will not gain too much weight and if you don't gain too much weight it is much easier to get back to pre-pregnancy size. And if you breastfeed you'll ditch those LBs even faster.
