  • Disabled parents face loss of kids

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

blindA Kansas City, MO couple had their daughter taken away by the state two days after she was born because both parents were blind. The nurse reported that the mother was having trouble with breastfeeding and was concerned about her ability to care for the child.

"Parents with disabilties continue to be the only distinct community that has to fight to retain - and sometimes gain- custody of their own children," said autism-rights activist Ari Ne'eman.

After a 57 day legal battle the blind parents did get their baby back. Since they've been left alone, but speak about their experience in support of other people facing similar challenges.

A Windsor, Colorado woman, Carrie Ann Lucas, says her experience prompted her to go to law school to fight for herself and others like her.

Lucas is confined to a wheelchair and uses a ventilator due to a form of muscular dystrophy. She is a single mother of 4 adopted children all of them have disabilities. Two also use wheelchairs and three of them have mental disabilities.

She has been investigated by Child Services on multiple occassions which she claims is only because of her disabilities. The first of these dated back to 1999 when first attempted adopted her niece after she had been placed in foster care. The social worker told the judge, "There's no way a handicapped woman could care for that handicapped child." The judge did grant Lucas custody of her niece and 13 years later she is doing well.

Child-welfare expert Judith Schargrin said, "At the end of the day, the child's interest in having permanence and stability has to be the priority over the intrests of their parents."

In Arlington Heights, Illinois, Jenn Thomas, a 36 year old mother of 8 year old twins who has cerebral palsy, says her kids sometimes complain about having to do extra chores to help her out around the house, but for the most part things are pretty normal. The couple has created a support network to help when Jenn's husband is working. Social workers view this team of support as evidence that the disabled parent on their own is incapable.

black friday15 Black Friday tips that could save your life from by Sunshine Simmons with a few modifications by Bryan and Nikki

    1. Look at sites like to find out which stores have teh things on your list as well as door busters.
    2. Make sure you pay attention to door buster times, because many stores have different door busters at different times.
    3. Take water, dehydration can make your Black Friday shopping trip end in misery
    4. Fill a thermos, unless you plan on hitting that $5 cup of coffee more than once
    5. Take a buddy. You never know if the crowd you're in is the one that's going to bum rush, and people have been known to lose their lives. Don't go alone.
    6. Have a plan. Map out your trip before you leave.
    7. Have an attitude adjustment. So many people refuse to go out because there are too many crabby people. Spread Christmas cheer.
    8. Share ideas. If you've already been to a store and they are out of something, tell people in line at the next store. They will be thankful they didn't waste their time.
    9. Set a budget!
    10. Have a strategy. If a store doesn't have what youwant as a time restricted door buster, try going two hours after it opens.
    11. Don't forget to eat. Bring snacks you don't need a blood sugar crash in the middle of your shopping trip.
    12. Don't get into a fight over materialistic items.
    13. Be mindful of elderly people they need a little extra time and space
    14. Get a baby sitter. Please don't drag your children with you that early in the morning! We got a message from a listener that witnessed a woman who let her child pee their pants because she refused to get out of line to take him to the bathroom!
    15. Most of all have fun!

  • Blake and Miranda were the big winners

    Posted by Nikki Montgomery

Blake Shelton won the night's biggest honor, CMA Entertainer of the year, during the Country Music Association Awards.

Blake put his head in his hands after Reba McEntire and Tim Allen announced his name.

He threw out his arms on stage, laughed and said, "You can tell this time I really didn't think (I'd win). Man, whoa. Entertainer of the year? What are you talking about?"...

"... Yo know what, listen here. Man when I moved to Nashville in 1994, I had two goals - one was to someday to have a Gold record and (the second) was to someday be a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Entertainer of the year was, what is this? I don't even know.

"... Look, I'm not even on the road..Taylor Swift? I don't know how this happen, but I freakin love it though. I try to represent country music as best as I can...I love country music more than anybody else in this room. Thank you."

(Blake took the award over Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean and Brad Paisley.)

He also won Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for "Over You", which he wrote with wife Miranda Lambert.

The awards show was hosted yet again by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.

  • Is that a milk mustache on Miranda?

    Posted by Bryan Scott

Yup, sure is!  Well, sort of!?  Miranda is the newest face of the "Got Milk?" campaign.  But she said that it is not milk (at least 100% milk that they use).

She says, "It's milk and it has a foam to it and also some yogurt. And it takes a while. And you drink it, you have to drink it—it tastes good! Then you have to use a Q-tip to get it perfect. It took four or five times to get it. But it's pretty!"
